Who did Cain marry? How can we believe a Bible which tells us Eve was made from Adam’s rib? How do we reconcile the Bible’s teaching with evolution? How much truth is there in the stories of Noah’s Ark and the Tower of Babel? Theologians have been puzzling about these questions for centuries. Now at last they have been answered – by a chimpanzee! Read how Washoe, the first chimpanzee to be taught sign language, gave us the answers. A “talking chimpanzee” causes real problems for Christians, who from the beginning have believed that the ability to speak was the sign of an immortal soul. Do we now have to believe that chimpanzees have souls? Are they really talking, or is it just conditioned reflex? This book tackles a subject which has been almost completely avoided by Christian writers. The author makes it clear that these new discoveries pose no threat to Christian beliefs. |
From the Preface:
Speak, and I shall baptise thee: Cardinal de Polignac (18th-century) on seeing an orang-utan for the first time
Ever since Darwin wrote “The Origin of Species” in the 19th century, there has been an apparent conflict between science and the Bible, especially the book of Genesis and the origins of man. Modern physics, with its description of the universe being created in a “big bang” instead of 7 days has only made things worse. If scripture is the word of God, then it must be true. But most of science can be shown to be true, and science says that the world did not come into existence in the way Genesis describes. More especially, according to science, God did not make man out of the dust of the ground as Genesis says, nor was Eve made from Adam’s rib, but men and women evolved from monkeys, or rather from ape-like creatures.
Recently chimpanzees and other apes have been taught sign language and have been seen using tools. The chimpanzees are using signs in what appears to be intelligent ways. A talking chimpanzee seems to threaten our position as unique among the animal kingdom. It even raises questions about man having souls, because for centuries Christians have believed that the ability to speak was the sign of an immortal soul.
This book helps today’s Christians, and any other reader who may be interested, tackle these problems.
